I love SpecialFit!

Colin Stein

Special fit is an important part of my life. I like working out there with my friends. It helps me feel strong in more than just my body. Through being there I have also learned that strength in my mind is certainly a part of overall health. Me getting stronger means building the relationships that lead to a stronger community.

When I'm not working out I am at school, I play hockey, take guitar lessons, and spend time with my family or watching videos about elevators.

Ian Short

My name is Ian Short. I am 20 years old and I live with my Mom and brother, Harry,  in Pasadena, Ca. I attend the Pals program offered  in the PUSD. I joined Special Fit at first because my Mom found out about it. I have learned so much since joining. I had never been in a gym like this before, and it was exciting to see all of the equipment. At first, it seemed a little overwhelming to try all of the new things, but I feel very happy and proud of myself when I can learn something new. I like to be challenged. I enjoy having Coach Mike, or Coach Ryan, Coach Sergio or Coach Eddie. I like having strong and physically fit coaches who inspire and cheer me on with such kindness. I am getting stronger. I like jumping on the box, the rowing machine and treadmill. I like catching the heavy ball but I would prefer to play catch than do the squats with it, but I am getting more focused. I look forward to every Sunday, as it feels good to work out and get stronger and more focused. I feel calmer afterwards. Special Fit has helped me get stronger in my core and my upper body. I had trouble lifting the weights at first but now it is easier. What I have learned at Special Fit helps me in every aspect of my life. I can follow directions easier, I’m more focused and calm and I even get to attend a PE class at Pasadena City College, where I work out on weights. I love hiking, going to the mall, the movies, going out to eat, shopping and being with my friends and family. I love the Ocean. I am a really good body surfer. My one tip I would give, is to do your best and don’t give up if at first you can’t do what is being asked of you. They don’t get mad at you or make you feel bad. Hang in there. You will see and feel the results.

Harry Short

My name is Harry Short. I am 17 years old and I live in Pasadena with my Mom, Tamara, and my older brother, Ian. I attend Pasadena High School. My Mom got us started at Special Fit and honestly, it is very difficult for me to go into buildings that I don’t know. I just didn’t know what was expected of me. The really cool thing is, they didn’t force or push me to do anything at first. Coach Mike knew exactly what to do and he let me jump around, get my anxiety out, and never made me do anything I wasn’t ready to do. Now, it is one of my favorite things to do. I feel so much calmer and focused in the gym and the rest of the day after I leave. I wish I could go everyday because I have so much energy and it helps me not be so anxious. My best moment was when I could stay the whole session and do the workout. I realized I was capable of staying with something. I like all of the coaches. They are really good and make me feel special. I love the treadmill the most. I like to run...I am fast and strong. I like the rowing machine, the pull ups , but not so crazy about the plank or push up part. I just like to keep moving but the coaches understand me and don’t judge. When I am out of the gym, I am kind of a loner. I have difficulty with crowds and lots of noise. I love hiking, the beach, anything in nature. It calms me. I am most at peace in nature and in my house. I love my teacher and my friends and helpers at school. At home, I have so many good people who care about me that I feel happy with all of them. I would tell anyone who is like me and has a lot of energy and anxiety, to give it Time. Go at your own pace. These coaches are the best and are here to help. I think if you stay with it, you will really like it. I sure do.
